History:

In the 1940's, a young Forrest C. Higgins Sr. had the opportunity to buy a few hundred acres of land around the small village of Moose River, Nova Scotia for $2.00 an acre. On this land during the 40's and 50's he cut, hand-tied and shipped wild balsam fir Christmas trees to the Boston Area. Over the following years he expanded this small, wholesale venture into a number of retail operations.

When Forrest Higgins Jr. became a teenager, he became interested the Christmas tree business, and worked at it during his summer vacations, also selling them himself during the holiday season. His older sister Sally helped with retailing and wholesaling as well.

When Forrest finished his studies at university in the late 70's, he decided to take on the business himself full-time, developing tree lots, and building the business. As the business continued to be grow, other members of the family helped on a part-time basis in December to the point where there were five retail locations and a considerable wholesale business. Forrest, and his wife Kathy decided to live in Musqodoboit where they could be closer to the business. His children have now grown-up and help out each Christmas retailing the trees, as do Sally's daughters Jill and Julie. Sally and her husband Gerry play a major role in the business, setting up the retail lots, wholesaling, and retailing. Hence the name "Higgins Family Trees".
